Treskilling Yellow - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Rule #4 of Collecting:  Collect Rare Earth Elements, Antimatter or Radioisotopes when looking for a good investment.  Otherwise collect stamps that somebody screwed up on.  Screwups complete an otherwise completed collection.

The "Treskilling" Yellow, or 3 skilling banco error of color, is a postage stamp of Sweden, and as of 2004 the most valuable stamp in the world. At a price of $71 billion (USD) per kilogram (as of 1998) it is one of the most valuable things in the world by weight and by volume. (However, it is not as expensive as antimatter and some radioisotopes.)

Again, make sure Kings have owned or tried to own it, and it has gone through a number of well-documented and well-known hands.

If a well-respected establishment declares the stamp a forgery, then backs down from their claim, Moore's stamp law of doubling values every 24 months will commence.

In the 1970s, the Swedish Postal Museum caused controversy by declaring the stamp to be a forgery, but after examination by two different commissions, it was agreed that it was a genuine error.

In 1984 the stamp made headlines when it was sold by David Feldman for 977,500 Swiss francs. A 1990 sale realized over one million US dollars, then in 1996 it sold again for 2,500,000 Swiss francs. Each time it has been sold it has set world records.
