Hawaiian Missionaries - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Rule #3 of Collecting: Don't forget rule  #1.

The Hawaiian Missionaries are the first postage stamps of the Kingdom of Hawaii. Issued in 1851, they came to be known as the "Missionaries" because they were primarily found on the correspondence of missionaries working in the islands. Only a handful of these stamps have survived to the present day, and so they are among the great rarities of philately.

Until Rule #1 becomes a commodity (after 1940)

On the first day of issue a set of stamps can be purchased attached to an envelope which had been post-marked with a special commemorative post mark, or a normal post mark. These envelopes usually bear a commemorative picture of the subject the stamp is created for.
